Social Problems Facing Mexico
United Mexican States or most known as Mexico is the fifth largest country in the Americas in total area. It has a population that is estimated of over 112 million and considered as the eleventh most populous country. Mexico has also its social issues and problems. They are characterized with their sharp class and social divisions. The one who control much of the country’s property and wealth are those small upper class one while the rest of the Mexicans live in poverty. Those middle class Mexicans have the same lifestyles with those middle class families in the United States that are living in an apartment and homes that have modern amenities like running water, electricity, having at least one or more automobiles and having an educational and health care benefit.
Almost Mexicans live in different degrees of poverty. But there government does not issue the figure of their official poverty. There are national and international organizations that show studies and try to paint to show the poverty In Mexico. There are organizations that use “Basic Basket of Foodstuffs”, this is to help them identify if the families can satisfy even their minimal needs for housing, clothing, nutrition and health care. Those families that cannot afford this basket with their daily income are said to be living in an extreme poverty. While those who had a daily income of more than the value of the basket but not greater than twice its value are living in poverty. The recent economic problem of Mexico have affected middle and lower families much more than those wealthy families. If the family in Mexico that have highest income increased their overall wealth and those poor Mexicans earnings declined it means that this lower and middle class families have to reduce or limit their spending on their food and other basic necessities. There are many poor Mexicans that have little or even no access to any health care. Even they want to go to see medical attention they can’t afford it. Because of this their illness gets worse. There are also poor Mexicans also live in house that is lacks one or even more basic amenities like running water, electricity and even sewerage. Even thou the quality of their housing had improved since 1970, around mid 1990s 12 percent of the Mexican still has no electricity and 11 percent don’t have running water and 26 percent that have no sewer facilities. Malnutrition is also a social issue in this country. Many children suffered malnutrition because they don’t have enough money to buy food and vitamins. They just eat what is available. This has been very disturbing especially if you see it in news and how they look like. Drop out of children in school is increasing also because children want to earn money for their families so that they can help with their daily needs. And other social problems that are in line with children are drug abuse and juvenile crime has also increased.
Because of the rapid and increasing growth of their population, the government services are strained most especially with their education and health care that put tremendous pressure for their government and economy to create more new jobs. With this thousands of skilled and even unskilled workers migrate north to the United States just to look for a job. Because of these different issues it also increases the level of urban crimes in different country and most especially in Mexico.
